I've used ableton live many times, and I still don't get it - I guess the workflow is optimized for live mixing? I found it less than ideal for recording in a studio. Right now I'm using: LMMS (sequencer), Ardour (daw), JAMin (mastering suite), and Audacity (swiss army knife). But if your music is 100% digital synths and samples, it serves all your needs. I don't think of it as a daw more of a sequencer. Strange behavior like that, but fortunately it's rare.īut all that considered, LMMS is still great, and I appreciate the work it's authors put into it.

And I've noticed some glitchy behavior - for instance, I just made a ZynAddSubFX patch that sounded different as a plugin in LMMS than when I used it in Zyn's own application.

Make sure your recording setup has VERY little noise, because Reapers noise reduction plugin is honestly not as good as Audacitys. There are some awkward things about using it (why do I have to make a blank bar before I copy and paste a bar into it?). I like Reaper, but I will give one tidbit of advice to you should you switch. The interface lacks polish and consistency. I used to use WAVEREPAIR to record LPs for conversion to CD and I retain it for the occasional lopping of beginning/end when I've forgotten to edit properly when rendering in Reaper IF I've dithered to 16bit/144.1 1st.

225 for commercial license and 60 for discounted. Audacity doesn't do anything I can't do in Reaper.

It is very inexpensive compared to pro tools, sonar, etc and has a very generous licensing model (they only nag you for a few seconds if you havent purchased after the trial). Would recommend it to anyone who wants a FLOSS DAW and isn't too dependent on mental models from other audio software. Id like to recommend Reaper for the DAW (digital audio workstation) in place of audacity or adobe audition. Studio1 is not as pricey, but more than Reaper with the same curve. Reaper is the best DAW a windows user can get without throwing out a few hundred dollars, and I dug in and found out those expensive pieces were just as steep a learning curve. Rounding up, all three versions will set you back triple digits. Ableton Live Intro can be bought for 99 USD. Ableton Live Standard can be bought for 449 USD. But in the last few years, ardour has improved. Learning a DAW is almost like learning a new instrument. At 749 USD, Ableton Live Suite (the most fully-featured edition) is more expensive than other DAWs. However, although its more of a beatmaking software, ive recorded vocals in real time w/effects in Fl studio. well ive never used reaper but it sounds like it might be the way to go.

I would agree, re: rough edges, if we were talking about Ardour 2 or 3, which both missed some important features and weren't as stable as I'd like. Also, I would like to have more effects than audacity offers.
